MP's call for sex toy manufacturing rules supported

Some Calgary sex toy shops are behind an Ontario politician's push to see the industry regulated to better protect consumers.

Carolyn Bennett, a medical doctor and Toronto MP, made the pitch to the federal health minister this week saying chemicals used in most sex toys pose potential health risks for women.

The owner of A Little More Interesting, said it's refreshing to see a politician willing to take a stand on the touchy topic.

"There are absolutely no regulations," she said from her Calgary adult boutique.

"You have to trust the store you are buying at."

While she said she couldn't sell something she knew to be harmful -- in a world where knock-offs and cheap productions can be bought for a third of the cost and lucratively sold -- there are definitely some retailers attracted to "profitability over responsibility."

Let's talk about sex: plays designed to stimulate seniors

The program, called Seniors A GoGo, is meant to open up conversations about safe sex and sexuality, said Nicole Hergert, a counsellor at the Calgary Sexual Health Centre.

A Calgary "sex positive boutique" called A Little More Interesting is also a partner in the project and will host a production.

Sex boutique challenges attitudes

Robin Summerfield, Calgary Herald Published: Friday, November 30, 2007

The owner doesn't fit the stereotype.

The 34-year-old Calgarian has an MBA, worked on Wall Street as an investment banker, and lives in a southwest Calgary suburb with her husband and their four kids, ages 11 months, two and twins, age four.

P.S. I Love You (and You and You)

Polyamorous couples say monogamous marriage is an archaic custom, that it imposes unhealthy self-denial while suppressing a healthy attitude toward companionship in general. Can’t we all just get along? Like, really get along?

Now That’s A Little More Interesting

Business Review by Allison Brodowski - From March 2008 (Page 31)

There is something to be said when a sex toy store makes a point of being ”sex positive”. The industry surrounding an obvious cultural obsession has proven time and time again that pleasure and comfort are sidelined by profits. Simple oversights such as cancer causing agents in dildos and cock rings, lubricants that cause yeast infections and skin irritations, or badly placed warnings on vibrators sold exclusively as ‘adult novelties’ are all too common.
